Here at Newport Avenue Market, we are committed to offering organic food options for a lot of reasons. For starters, several of our customers continually ask us to. Secondly, our produce team of expert, employee-owners have a deep background in organic foods and select only the best organic fruits and vegetables available.[vc_empty_space height=”15px”]

Why Organic Fruits and Vegetables?

Some customers on the other hand ask us “What’s so great about organic fruits and vegetables, anyway?” Well, when it comes to making decisions about what’s best to put in our shopping baskets (and into our bodies) we look to the most basic and proven science.

Organic fruits, vegetables, and grains are grown without the use of most synthetic pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Plus, organic growing methods yield crops that are about half as likely to contain cadmium, a toxic heavy metal that accumulates in the body. Finally, organic farming protects water, soil, bees, and other helpful insects.[vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_single_image image=”24061″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]

Our organic greens, such as lettuces, Swiss chard, rainbow chard, Italian kale, collards, and mustard greens arrive at the market daily (except Sundays), so they’re always fresh.

Even Better Than Organic? Local and Organic!

Local and organic produce truly hits our sweet spot. It’s why we love offering Volcano Veggies’ salad greens and basil in our produce department. It’s as local as local gets, grown right here in Bend, year-round, by Jimmy and Shannon Sbarra. By the way, did you know Volcano Veggies is the only commercial aquaponic farm in Bend and one of the first certified organic indoor vertical aquaponic farms in the world?![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_single_image image=”24063″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]We love bringing you the bounty of small, organic, family farms in Oregon and the Northwest. We do our research on the growers, and we get to know them. Our friendly farmers are super selective about what they ship, and let the fruit mature on their trees longer, allowing the natural sugars to develop more. They also focus on crop rotation to keep soil healthy which yields high quality fruit and enhances flavor.

Some Top New Organic Produce Picks

Keeping things interesting is our style, so in our aisles you’ll find less common varieties of apples and pears grown in the Columbia Gorge. We get excited about heirloom apples, such as the Cox orange pippin, an award-winning, English dessert apple. It’s sweet-tart, crisp and aromatic flesh, great for enjoying with cheese or baking in pies. They’re also perfect to take to work for a snack or to toss in your backpack for your next outdoor adventure.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_single_image image=”24064″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]

New This Year (and Just in Time for Thanksgiving)!

As you start to plan this year’s Thanksgiving menu (after you’ve ordered your Shelton All Natural Turkey by calling the store, 541-382-3940 or visiting our Meat Department), check out a new addition to our produce section: fresh, organic, Oregon-grown cranberries. Their perfect vitamin-packed features pair perfectly with savory dishes.

One favorite squash this season is the organic Delicata, it has a cylindrical shaped, with green and cream-colored stripes. More user-friendly than butternut, the skin is thin and delicate (hence the name), so you don’t have to peel it. Just scoop out the seeds, cut it in half lengthwise, slice it into 1/4-inch-thick slices, and sauté it in olive oil. Or, roast it with rosemary, butter, and maple syrup for a great side dish to pork or turkey. Plus, don’t forget, there’s always the pre-cut butternut squash that’s ready for your oven and to make home cooking a little easier![/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_single_image image=”24065″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_single_image image=”24066″ img_size=”full” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]
