Beer of the Week: Bauman’s Cider Brings Oregon Farm Flavor to Newport
Beer of the Week has gone a little rogue. This week, we’re giving apples, and a few very delicious berries, the spotlight.
Our featured lineup of Bauman’s Ciderat Newport Avenue Market includes All the Berries, Loganberry and Clyde’s Dry. From juicy, semi-sweet berry flavors to a dry apple blend with deep family roots, these Oregon-made hard ciders offer three reasons to make room in your fall fridge.
Oregon roots, orchard to glass
Based in Gervais, Oregon, Bauman’s Cider Company carries on a family tradition rooted in the land. The Bauman family farm was homesteaded in 1895, and family cidermaking began in the early 1900s.
Founder and head cidermaker Christine Walter, a fifth-generation farmer, launched Bauman’s Cider in 2016. Her approach brings together modern cidermaking and traditional methods, using fruit grown and harvested on the family farm whenever possible.
That’s the kind of story we love at Newport: real people, a connection to place and something delicious to show for it.
All the Berries: a little Oregon summer for your fall glass
If your ideal cider brings plenty of fruit flavor and a touch of sweetness, start here. All the Berries is a semi-sweet cider featuring blueberries, raspberries and marionberries grown on the Bauman family farm. It’s a tribute to Oregon’s berry bounty—and an excellent reminder that sweater weather doesn’t mean we have to say goodbye to summer flavors.
Our pairing suggestion: Try it with creamy brie, a handful of nuts and a snack board assembled with whatever looks irresistible in our cheese department. Very scientific. Very delicious.
Loganberry: soft sweetness, beautiful balance
Looking for a middle ground between sweet and dry? Loganberry brings a semi-dry profile with soft sweetness and fresh loganberry flavor. Bauman’s describes this cider as apples finished with estate-grown loganberries.
This is the bottle to reach for when you want berry character without choosing the sweeter end of the lineup.
Our pairing suggestion: Pour it alongside roast chicken, a turkey sandwich or a mild cheddar. An ordinary lunch can have a little main-character energy.
Clyde’s Dry: family history in every pour
Named in tribute to Christine’s Grandpa Clyde, Clyde’s Dry honors a life spent on the family farm.
This dry cider blends multiple apple varieties, including sweet and sharp apples grown on the farm. Locally picked Manchurian crab apples contribute tannic character, giving the blend added structure.
If you prefer your cider on the dry, apple-focused side, put this one on your list.
Our pairing suggestion: Enjoy it with sharp cheddar, roasted pork or a fall dinner featuring squash and savory herbs.
